TRE® and Neurogenic Yoga™

What is TRE®?

TRE®, Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises, is a somatic, trauma-informed practice developed by Dr. David Berceli following years of work in war zones and disaster areas around the world. Dr. Berceli observed that all bodies under threat would curl in and brace themselves, as if to protect the vital internal organs. When an immediate threat passed, children would spontaneously shake, their bodies tremoring and releasing the activation from the stress response. Adults, by contrast, would hold that tension pattern and continue to brace, overriding the body’s natural discharge mechanism in the name of strength and composure.

TRE® works by reversing that pattern. TRE® is a set sequence of seven exercises, the same every time, working from the feet and ankles up through the hips and lower body. These exercises gently fatigue and stretche specific muscle groups in a way that allows the body to begin tremoring on its own. Not because you are making it happen. Because you are finally letting it.

The consistency and predictability of the TRE® sequence is part of what makes it so accessible, particularly for people who are new to somatic work or who find unpredictability uncomfortable. You will know what to expect. That safety is built into the structure of the practice itself.

What is Neurogenic Yoga™?

Neurogenic Yoga™ is a trauma-informed yoga practice that helps prepare the body for neurogenic tremoring. Slow, nourishing, and attentive to the nervous system, it weaves classical yoga postures and breathwork into a sequence designed to open and release the body, particularly the lower body and hips, before inviting the tremoring response.

Unlike TRE®, the sequence varies with each practice. Where TRE® focuses primarily on the lower body, Neurogenic Yoga™ is a whole-body practice. The two share the same destination: the final exercise of both practices brings you to the floor to experience the tremoring process directly, allowing the nervous system to discharge held tension and return toward regulation.

Which One Is Right for You?

Both practices access the same neurogenic tremor response and support the same underlying goal: nervous system regulation and the release of chronically held tension. The difference is in the path, not the destination.

TRE® may be the better starting point if:

  • You are new to somatic or body-based work

  • You have a significant anxiety history or find unpredictability uncomfortable

  • The word “yoga” feels unfamiliar or unappealing

  • You prefer a structured, repeatable sequence you can learn and practice independently

Neurogenic Yoga™ may be the better fit if:

  • You already have a yoga practice and want to deepen its somatic dimension

  • You enjoy variety and full-body movement as part of your practice

  • You are looking for something that integrates breathwork and classical yoga with the tremoring process

Many clients begin with TRE® and move into Neurogenic Yoga™ as their comfort with the tremoring process grows. Others practice both. The consultation is where we figure out together which direction makes most sense for you.

Who Benefits?

TRE® and Neurogenic Yoga™ are suitable for adults at any fitness level and with no prior somatic or yoga experience required. Both practices are trauma-informed, self-regulated, and designed to honor each person’s pace.

They are particularly well suited for:

  • Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation

  • Anxiety and panic disorder

  • Burnout and fatigue

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Held tension in the hips, lower back, shoulders, and neck

  • The whole body challenges of perimenopause and menopause

  • Anyone who has tried talk-based approaches and found that something in the body remains unresolved

TRE® and Neurogenic Yoga™ are somatic education practices, not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care. Please consult your physician or mental health provider before beginning if you have significant health concerns.
